Allergies

Food Allergies & Sensitivities

Do you suffer from:

* Brain fog
* Low energy
* Nausea
* Skin disorders, e.g. Eczema
* Stomach bloating
* Constipation
* Diarrhoea
* Food cravings
* Weight gain
* Irritability
* Decreased motivation
* Depression
* Headaches
* Blocked sinus
* Constant colds or flu

Food sensitivities and allergies are health concerns which are often not very well understood. It is rarely as simple as removing the problem food from your diet, as the predisposing factors which caused the allergy or sensitivity in the first place still remain.

Listen to Joe talk about Allergies

There are various factors which can make you more sensitive to various foods.  These may include:

  • Exposure to an unfamiliar protein in the early months of life
  • Repeated exposure to a food during times of stress and low immunity
  • Poor digestion
  • Compromised integrity or inflammation of the lining of the gastro-intestinal tract
  • An immune system which is out of balance and responding inappropriately to various food stimuli.

If you are struggling with food sensitivities or allergies, it is therefore important that you are assessed on an individual basis, so that we can determine and help resolve the underlying cause.

Food Allergy Testing:

We can also request comprehensive diagnostic testing for you, to determine precisely which foods you are reacting to – they’re often not the ones you think! This is a more accurate alternative to elimination diets, which although useful, are not appropriate for everybody, as they can be time-consuming, inconclusive and stressful for the person concerned.

The comprehensive information provided by food allergy testing helps us design a dietary plan especially for you, to minimize adverse reactions, while ensuring you maintain good quality nutrition.

What Are Allergies?

Allergies are an immune response to a substance that is normally harmless to most people. These substances, known as allergens, can include pollen, dust mites, animal dander and certain foods.

For some people, allergies may be seasonal and come and go. For others, symptoms can be persistent and affect everyday life.

Allergy symptoms can include sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes, sinus discomfort, skin irritation and itching. Some people may also notice digestive symptoms or changes in their general wellbeing.

At Advanced Natural Medicine, we look beyond the individual symptom. We consider the wider picture of your health, including immune function, digestion, gut health, skin health, nutrition, lifestyle, sleep and environmental factors.

Allergies Are More Than Just Sneezing

When most people think about allergies, they think about hay fever, sneezing or a blocked nose.

However, allergic and immune responses can involve different areas of the body. Some people experience symptoms through their skin, while others notice digestive symptoms or changes in their overall energy and wellbeing.

If symptoms keep returning, it can be helpful to look at your health as a whole rather than simply focusing on the individual symptom.

Your Immune System Plays a Central Role

Your immune system is designed to protect you. With an allergy, however, the immune system reacts to a substance that would normally be harmless.

Supporting healthy immune regulation is therefore an important part of understanding allergies.

Rather than simply asking how to suppress a symptom, a naturopathic approach looks at the factors that may be influencing your individual immune response.

Your Gut and Immune System Are Closely Connected

Your digestive system does much more than digest food. The gastrointestinal tract has an important relationship with the immune system.

This is one reason we may consider digestive and gut health when someone presents with recurring allergy symptoms.

We can look at digestion, bowel function, diet and the overall health of the gastrointestinal system as part of your individual health picture.

Your Gut Microbiome Matters

Your digestive tract is home to trillions of microorganisms that interact with your body and immune system.

The balance of these microorganisms is an important area of interest in natural health. Research into specific beneficial bacteria has explored their relationship with immune regulation and allergy symptoms.

This doesn’t mean that every person with allergies has a gut problem. Instead, it highlights why gut health can be worth considering as part of a broader assessment.

Don’t Overlook Your Skin

Allergy and immune-related issues can sometimes be reflected through the skin.

Itching, irritation, rashes and eczema may occur alongside other health concerns. When someone has both allergy and skin symptoms, it can be useful to consider the two together.

We may look at skin health alongside digestion, immune function, diet and lifestyle rather than treating the skin as an isolated issue.

Inflammation Can Be Part of the Picture

Allergic reactions involve immune activity and inflammatory processes.

When looking at recurring allergy symptoms, we consider factors that can influence healthy inflammatory balance. These may include nutrition, digestive health, immune function, stress, sleep and environmental exposures.

Every person is different, so the focus is on understanding your individual circumstances rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Seasonal Allergies Can Be Particularly Frustrating

For many people, spring and summer can bring an increase in allergy symptoms due to greater exposure to environmental allergens such as pollen.

Symptoms can make you feel congested, tired, uncomfortable and generally run down.

Keeping a simple record of when your symptoms occur, where you have been and what you have been exposed to can sometimes help identify patterns and potential triggers.

Food Reactions Aren’t Always Straightforward

Not every reaction to food is a true food allergy.

Food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities are different, and their symptoms can sometimes overlap with digestive problems.

This is why removing large numbers of foods from your diet without a clear reason may not always be helpful. A structured approach can help identify patterns while ensuring your diet remains balanced and nutritious.

Stress and Sleep Matter Too

Living with recurring allergy symptoms can affect your quality of life.

Congestion, itching, sneezing and discomfort can interfere with sleep and leave you feeling tired during the day.

Stress and poor sleep can also make it more difficult to manage your general wellbeing. For this reason, we consider sleep, stress, energy and lifestyle as part of the bigger picture when discussing allergy support.

Everyone’s Allergies Are Different

There isn’t one single approach that suits everyone.

Two people may both describe their problem as “hay fever”, but their symptoms, triggers, digestion, skin health, diet, lifestyle and overall health can be very different.

At Advanced Natural Medicine, we take the time to understand your individual health history and the pattern of your symptoms before developing an appropriate health programme.

Looking at the Whole Picture

Our approach is about understanding you, not simply your allergy symptoms.

We may consider:

  • Immune function
  • Gut and digestive health
  • Skin health
  • Nutrition
  • Lifestyle
  • Sleep and stress
  • Environmental triggers
  • Your individual health history
  • The pattern and timing of your symptoms

The goal is to identify the areas where individual support may be appropriate and help you make practical changes that fit into your everyday life.

When Should You Seek Support?

If allergies are affecting your sleep, work, exercise, concentration, skin or general wellbeing, it may be worth looking more closely at what is happening.

At Advanced Natural Medicine, we can take a broader look at your health and discuss natural health strategies that may be appropriate for you.

If you experience a severe allergic reaction or symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, or a rapid deterioration in your condition, seek urgent medical attention.
