Bowel & Digestive Issues

Bowel and Digestive Issues

At Advanced Natural Medicine we offer a unique bowel regeneration program.  This includes educating you on diet and getting your stomach and digestive enzymes working properly so that your body can absorb nutrients more effectively.  We usually get good results within two to four weeks and the clients concerned feel much happier.  (Results may vary from person to person.)

In both Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, digestive issues are considered the cause of all disease.  If your bowels are not functioning properly, your whole body is affected.  Sometimes this can be obvious – such as in cases of food poisoning, constipation and diarrhoea – or more subtle, such as with low energy, brain fog, depression, osteoporosis and muscle cramps.

Belching, burping, a bloated stomach, Irritable Bowel, headaches, eczema and low immunity can often be caused by a poorly functioning bowel.

Bowel problems can affect much more than your digestion. When your gut is unsettled, it can influence your energy, sleep, mood, appetite and your confidence to go about everyday life.

At Advanced Natural Medicine, we understand that bowel problems can be uncomfortable to talk about. Whether you are dealing with constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal discomfort or an ongoing digestive condition, sometimes you just want someone to listen and help you work out what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Our Naturopathic approach looks at the person as a whole — including food, digestion, bowel habits, lifestyle, stress, sleep, medications and your wider health history.

We don’t believe there is a single approach that works for everyone. Your digestive symptoms and your individual health history matter.

Constipation & Sluggish Bowels

Constipation is one of the most common bowel complaints and can involve more than simply not going to the toilet regularly.

You may experience:

  • Hard or dry stools
  • Straining
  • Going less often than usual
  • Feeling that you haven’t completely emptied your bowel
  • Bloating or abdominal discomfort
  • Gas and wind
  • Hemorrhoids

Constipation can be influenced by diet, fluid intake, physical activity, stress, changes in routine, pregnancy, certain health conditions and some medications.

A naturopathic approach may look at your overall diet, fibre intake, hydration, movement, toilet habits and digestive function rather than simply focusing on getting your bowels moving.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a common long-term gastrointestinal condition that can cause significant disruption to everyday life.

Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Bloating
  • Excessive gas
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Alternating constipation and diarrhoea
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Feeling that you haven’t completely emptied your bowel

Some people also experience fatigue, nausea, indigestion, headaches or symptoms that appear to change alongside stress.

IBS is different from inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. It is important that other possible causes of persistent bowel symptoms are considered when appropriate.

Naturopathic support for IBS may include looking closely at food patterns, meal timing, digestive function, stress, sleep, physical activity and the gut-brain connection.

Dietary changes may be helpful for some people.

Bloating, Gas & Abdominal Discomfort

Bloating can be frustrating, particularly when you wake up feeling comfortable but find your stomach becomes increasingly uncomfortable throughout the day.

Bloating and gas may occur alongside:

  • Constipation
  • IBS
  • Food sensitivities
  • Changes in bowel bacteria
  • Rapid eating
  • Certain carbohydrates or fermentable foods
  • Stress
  • Altered bowel movements

Sometimes the most useful place to start is simply understanding your pattern.

When does the bloating occur?
What foods seem to trigger it?
Are your bowel movements regular?
Does stress make it worse?
Are you experiencing pain, reflux or changes in appetite as well?

These questions can help build a more complete picture of your digestive health.

Diarrhoea & Loose Bowel Motions

Diarrhoea can be short-lived, such as following an infection or food poisoning, but ongoing or recurring diarrhoea deserves proper assessment.

Possible contributing factors can include:

  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • IBS
  • Food intolerances or sensitivities
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Medication effects
  • Changes in gut function
  • Certain dietary patterns

Persistent diarrhoea can also affect hydration and nutrient status, particularly when it occurs frequently.

Our naturopathic approach focuses on understanding what may be contributing to your symptoms and how we can best support you.

Alternating Constipation & Diarrhoea

Some people find their bowel symptoms don’t fit neatly into one category.

You may experience periods of constipation followed by loose bowel motions, or alternate between the two depending on food, stress, travel, illness or changes in routine.

This pattern is commonly experienced by people with IBS, although there can be other causes.

Rather than simply treating whichever symptom is happening that day, Naturopathic care can look at the bigger picture — bowel habits, diet, digestion, stress, sleep and lifestyle.

Food Reactions & Digestive Sensitivities

Food can be an important part of the digestive picture, but it isn’t always as simple as identifying one “bad” food.

Some people notice symptoms after eating particular foods, including:

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Reflux
  • Nausea

Food allergies and food intolerances are different and should not be treated as though they are the same thing.

A naturopathic approach can help you identify patterns without unnecessarily restricting your diet. Where appropriate, food and symptom tracking can be useful for identifying relationships between what you eat and how you feel.

Gut Microbiome & Bowel Health

Your digestive tract is home to a complex community of microorganisms that interact with the digestive system and the wider body.

Changes in the gut microbiome are being investigated in relation to conditions such as IBS and other gastrointestinal disorders. However, the gut microbiome is highly individual, and there is no single definition of a “perfect” gut microbiome.

Naturopathic bowel care may therefore consider the broader environment in which your gut bacteria live — including diet, fibre intake, variety of plant foods, bowel regularity, lifestyle and overall health.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes conditions such as:

  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Microscopic colitis

IBD involves inflammation within the digestive tract and is different from IBS.  New Zealand has one of the highest rates of IBD internationally.

People with IBD may experience abdominal pain, diarrhoea, changes in bowel habits, fatigue, weight loss and other symptoms depending on the condition and whether the disease is active.

Naturopathic care can be used as supportive care alongside your gastroenterologist or GP, with particular attention to nutrition, maintaining adequate nutrient intake, digestive comfort and general wellbeing.

Prescribed medication should not be stopped or changed without discussing this with your medical team.

Digestive Function & Nutrient Absorption

Good bowel health isn’t only about how often you go to the toilet.

Digestion involves a series of processes that allow food to be broken down and nutrients to be absorbed. Problems anywhere along this process can contribute to digestive discomfort.

Your naturopathic consultation may therefore consider:

  • Eating habits
  • Meal timing
  • Food quality and variety
  • Chewing and eating pace
  • Bowel frequency and stool consistency
  • Hydration
  • Digestive symptoms
  • Medications
  • Lifestyle
  • Stress and sleep

Sometimes small changes can make a meaningful difference to how comfortable you feel day to day.

Bowel Health, Nutrition & Lifestyle

Your everyday habits can have a significant influence on bowel function.

A healthy bowel is supported by a combination of:

Fibre-rich foods
Vegetables, fruit, legumes and wholegrain foods can contribute to adequate dietary fibre.

Adequate hydration
Fluid helps support normal bowel movements, particularly when increasing dietary fibre.

Regular movement
Physical activity supports normal bowel motility and is an important part of overall digestive health.

Regular meals and routines
Eating patterns and daily routines can influence digestion and bowel habits.

Stress management
The gut and brain communicate constantly. Stress can influence digestive symptoms, particularly for people with IBS.

Listening to your body
Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement can contribute to constipation. Giving yourself enough time and privacy to use the toilet can be surprisingly important.

A Naturopathic Approach to Bowel Disorders

At Advanced Natural Medicine, we don’t look at your bowel symptoms in isolation.

Your Naturopath may consider:

  • Your current symptoms and bowel patterns
  • Diet and food habits
  • Hydration and fibre intake
  • Digestive function
  • Stress and emotional wellbeing
  • Sleep
  • Physical activity
  • Medications and existing health conditions
  • Your wider health history
  • Whether further medical investigation may be appropriate

We aim to understand why your digestive system may be struggling and what practical changes may support better function.

And importantly, naturopathic care can sit alongside conventional healthcare. We do not ask you to stop prescribed medication or replace your GP or specialist. Where ongoing or concerning symptoms are present, appropriate medical assessment remains important.

When Should You See Your Doctor?

Not every bowel change is a cause for concern, but persistent or unexplained symptoms should not simply be ignored.

Seek medical assessment if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Blood in your bowel motions
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent or worsening abdominal pain
  • Ongoing diarrhoea
  • Significant or persistent constipation
  • Repeated vomiting
  • A swollen or increasingly distended abdomen
  • A significant change in bowel habits
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Symptoms that persist or continue to worsen

Symptoms such as persistent constipation, blood in the bowel motions, unexplained weight loss, ongoing fatigue and symptoms that may indicate bowel obstruction do need checking out.

Looking After Your Gut Long Term

Good bowel health isn’t about having a perfect digestive system every day.

Life happens. Stress happens. Travel, illness, changes in diet, medications and hormonal changes can all affect the gut.

The goal is to understand your individual digestive patterns and create realistic habits that support your health over time.

Sometimes you don’t need another restrictive diet or another complicated health plan.

Sometimes you just need someone to look at the whole picture with you.
